Spotlight on Service: Caroling for a Cause

Rebecca Kalmbach

Congratulations to Panther Creek High School Key Club, our featured club for the month of January!

During the holidays, Panther Creek High School Key Club, located in Cary, NC, participated in an event called Caroling for a Cause. The event is an ongoing project that was started 6 years ago in Cary by UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center to raise money for cancer research. Key Club members joined younger students in a local neighborhood to sing holiday songs on doorsteps up and down the streets, as well as ask for donations for the Lineberger Cancer Center. The entire Caroling for a Cause project has raised over $52,000 since it began. After several hours of singing, Panther Creek Key Club members ventured to a volunteer's house to enjoy some hot cocoa, desserts, and warmer temperatures inside. As you can see in the picture above, the club members had a wonderful time singing to raise funds. A student from Panther Creek shared that, "One lady told me she was grateful we were raising money for this cause because her husband had died of cancer the previous year. It was a heartwarming opportunity to contribute to the community, and I would definitely do it again next year." The afternoon was a success for Panther Creek and for the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center!

If you or your club is interested in being recognized on the website as a Spotlight on Service feature, like Panther Creek, email a submission to Spotlight@carolinaskeyclub.org. The entry must include a paragraph description of your club project as well as picture(s) of a decent quality. If selected, the club member or advisor that submitted the project will be contacted and each month, one club project will appear here!

Spotlight on Service: March of Dimes Dodgeball

Rebecca Kalmbach

Congratulations to our first highlighted club, Cape Fear High School!

The Cape Fear High School Key Club hosted its second annual dodgeball tournament to benefit one of Key Club International's preferred charities, The March of Dimes Foundation. Participants competed in teams to battle for the title of Dodgeball Champions. There were two winning teams in the tournament, the Average Joes, seen in the featured image, and the Dirty Dodgers. Cape Fear Key Club raised a total of $350 to send directly to the March of Dimes Foundation.

If your club is interested in hosting a Dodgeball Tournament, here are some helpful hints based off of Cape Fear Key Club's outstanding project:

  • Open the tournament to the entire student body to create a large pool of participants and teams.
  • Charge an entry fee, per person or per team, to raise funds for your selected cause.
  • Consider hosting a divisional tournament, open to the champions of each school in your division.

Keep an eye out for next month's winning Spotlight on Service submission, and congratulations again to Cape Fear High School Key Club!

Spotlight on Service: Introduction

Rebecca Kalmbach

What is Spotlight on Service?

Our brand new initiative this year, Spotlight on Service is a way to highlight individual club projects in the Carolinas. There will be posts on the website every month with a photo and a description of an outstanding Key Club service project. If you're searching for inspirational ideas to implement in your club or recognition for fantastic club members, Spotlight on Service is a great place to look.

So how do I submit a Spotlight on Service entry?

Any club advisor, officer, or member can submit a potential Spotlight on Service post to be considered for the website feature. To do so, send an email to spotlight@carolinaskeyclub.org and include the following: at least one quality photo and a detailed paragraph explaining the project or event. The email also needs to include the school's name and any important information you would like to have posted, such as the names of the Key Club members in the submitted photo(s).
