From the Governor: Kiwanis One Day

Cullen Tyndall, 2014-15 Governor

On April 5, 2014, members of the Kiwanis Family from all over the world participated in a global day of service known as Kiwanis One Day. This annual event is marked by members changing their communities simultaneously with others from across the globe. This year, Key Clubbers, Circle K members, and Kiwanians from the Carolinas District convened at The Boys and Girls Homes of Lake Waccamaw to take part in Kiwanis One Day. There, they worked to remove fallen limbs and debris that accumulated over the winter, and complete some of the other landscaping duties that needed attention. Kiwanians hosted a cookout lunch for all participants and everyone was able to enjoy an afternoon with others faithful servants to our homes, schools, and communities.

The next Kiwanis One Day will be held on April 11, 2015, and it is never to early to start planning your club's contribution to this global service effort!

For more information on Kiwanis One Day, visit the Kiwanis One Day website.

Spotlight on Service: Caroling for a Cause

Rebecca Kalmbach

Congratulations to Panther Creek High School Key Club, our featured club for the month of January!

During the holidays, Panther Creek High School Key Club, located in Cary, NC, participated in an event called Caroling for a Cause. The event is an ongoing project that was started 6 years ago in Cary by UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center to raise money for cancer research. Key Club members joined younger students in a local neighborhood to sing holiday songs on doorsteps up and down the streets, as well as ask for donations for the Lineberger Cancer Center. The entire Caroling for a Cause project has raised over $52,000 since it began. After several hours of singing, Panther Creek Key Club members ventured to a volunteer's house to enjoy some hot cocoa, desserts, and warmer temperatures inside. As you can see in the picture above, the club members had a wonderful time singing to raise funds. A student from Panther Creek shared that, "One lady told me she was grateful we were raising money for this cause because her husband had died of cancer the previous year. It was a heartwarming opportunity to contribute to the community, and I would definitely do it again next year." The afternoon was a success for Panther Creek and for the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center!

If you or your club is interested in being recognized on the website as a Spotlight on Service feature, like Panther Creek, email a submission to Spotlight@carolinaskeyclub.org. The entry must include a paragraph description of your club project as well as picture(s) of a decent quality. If selected, the club member or advisor that submitted the project will be contacted and each month, one club project will appear here!

Wishing You a Wonderful New Year!

Happy Holidays, Carolinas Key Clubs!

On behalf of the Carolinas District, we wish you a joyous holiday season and a happy, service-filled New Year! We hope you spend a little time celebrating all of your hard work and service from 2013. It's the time of year to reflect on how you've made a difference in your homes, schools and communities.

In honor of this season of giving, you and your club could hold a blanket or coat drive, donate to a local animal shelter, or sponsor an angel tree. You could host a few festivities like a Key Club Christmas Party, a caroling trip for a charity of your choice, or a Secret Santa gift exchange to boost club participation too! There are so many ways to give back and motivate your club during the holiday season; don’t be afraid to try something new and creative!

The Carolinas District wishes you a safe and relaxing holiday season. We hope you can utilize these fun event ideas and enjoy the last couple of days before school lets out. Let's have a great start to 2014 and another year of service!

Christmas For Children: Spreading Holiday Cheer to Those in Need

Carolinas Key Club members join Santa Claus to bring joy to the residents of Boys and Girls Homes.

The Boys and Girls Homes of Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina provide a safe haven for young people who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, offering temporary placements for children in crisis. Many children in the cottages of Lake Waccamaw have been physically, mentally, or sexually abused. Some come from homes where parents suffer from drug addiction or mental illness and they lack even the bare necessities for a healthy life. The Boys and Girls Homes acts as a refuge from these situations and advocates for children by way of adoption services. As the District Project of the Carolinas, Key Club members have partnered with the Boys and Girls Homes to support the programs, facilities, and missions at Lake Waccamaw.

With Christmas drawing closer, we picture decorated trees, glowing strings of lights, gingerbread houses, and an abundance of gifts. Unfortunately, many children at the Boys and Girls Homes have never experienced the warmth and cheer we are all blessed with feeling during the holiday season. Some residents have never celebrated the holidays or received a Christmas gift at all. However, we have the ability to make this year’s Christmas memorable for the children at Lake Waccamaw. If each Carolinas Key Club would send just $100.00 to the Christmas for Children campaign, we could buy clothes, sports equipment, toys, and computers for each cottage. We could additionally purchase learning aids for every child in the Boys and Girls Homes. There isn’t a more meaningful way to share the joy of the Christmas season than becoming part of such an effort.

Stories of harm, despair, and abuse are not the exceptions at the Boys and Girls Homes. These stories are common and represent the lives of so many. We ask for your donations and thoughts to bring Christmas and aid to these incredible boys and girls. Please send your contributions from clubs, foundations, businesses or personal funds to the address below. All contributions must be received by December 10, 2013.

From the Carolinas District of Key Club, thank you in advance for your help with the Christmas for Children campaign. Any donation is greatly appreciated, large or small, but we ask that you help as you are able. The impact of this campaign will truly be felt if we can meet 100% of the need at the Boys and Girls Homes this Christmas season.

Checks can be made payable to Boys and Girls Homes
